Jankovic reaches Kremlin Cup semifinals (AP)

Top-ranked Jelena Jankovic defeated Flavia Pennetta 7-6 (6), 6-3 Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Kremlin Cup. "It was a tough match for me today and I didn't play the way I wanted to," Jankovic said. "I felt a bit tired and was struggling." The 23-year-old Serb will face defending champion Elena Dementieva, who beat Nadia Petrova 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (6).



Federer to end 3-week layoff at Madrid (AP)Roger Federer will play at the Madrid Masters next week, ending a three-week layoff and setting up a possible meeting with top-ranked Rafael Nadal. "Without a doubt it's a wonderful thing knowing we can count on Roger Federer being here for another year," tournament director Manolo Santana said on Thursday.

Japanese wild card Kei Nishikori, ailing with a sore throat and aching knee, reached the Stockholm Open semifinals Friday when second-seeded Mario Ancic withdrew because of fever. "I wanted to play the match somehow," Nishikori said. "Now I've got a day to rest and I'm sure I can play. It's the semifinals.



Monfils upsets Gonzalez in Vienna (AP)Gael Monfils upset second-seeded Fernando Gonzalez 6-3, 7-6 (2) Friday to reach the semifinals of the BA Tennis Trophy. The eighth-seeded Frenchman will play Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany, who defeated fifth-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain 6-2, 6-3. "I was focused from the first ball to the last," said Monfils, who reached his fourth semifinal of the year.
